HI Kitty-- yes well, New Yorkers have gone all white wine and Perrier in the past few years....but trust me Americans still do toss it back in the Heartland enough to at least give the Irish a run for their money :-) I must say even though I am a bourbon lover, Irish whisky is excellent-- in fact you could say the Irish and Scots taught us Americans everything we know:-) Thanks for reading and commenting.

I'm Irish (therefore European) and until recently I lived in New York. Far from being shocked at American drinking habits I found Americans to be extraordinarily light drinkers. In fact this is one characteristic of Americans that Europeans talk about! In terms of sheer ability and desire to knock them back they have nothing on the Irish, Scottish, British or even the French (which is nothing to be sorry about). Also the Irish and Scots were making and knocking back whiskey for hundreds of years before America was even colonised. Written records go back to 1174 and the first registered distiller was in Bushmills Northern Ireland where they still brew the good stuff to this day.

I am not much of a bourbon drinker, but my favorite on that list is Makers Mark. Great article - very interesting history!
